Stephen is an AI & Information Management Consultant. Stephen has worked in senior public sector Information and Data Management roles over the last 20 years. His most recent role was as Digital Research Director: AI, Data Lakes and IM for the NZ government after moving on from his role as NZ Chief Archivist. Stephen was previously Chief Data Officer at the NZ Transport Agency has undertaken similar roles in Inland Revenue, Dept of Internal Affairs, Office of the Auditor General, the Office of the Ombudsman and the National Grid amongst others.
Internationally, Stephen is known as a standards expert, having developed standards for information management for Australia and New Zealand and internationally for ISO, including ISO15489, 23081, 161715, 13028 and is currently working on the new Standards for Records Management for AI.
His current passion is for using AI/ML for RIM Use Cases and for implementing RIM into AI Use cases. His first significant AI project was leading an AI/ML proof of concept for Archives NZ, with Microsoft and Amazon AWS, to auto-classify legacy Shared drives and SharePoint records for Public Records Act compliance and to surface information of interest to Māori in 2020/21.
