AEC Checks Meta AI's Handling of Election Questions, Steers Clear of Policing Deepfaked Political Content

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is conducting its own evaluations on tools like Meta AI to assess their vulnerability to generating “false information about the Australian election.”

Commissioner Tom Rogers informed a senate inquiry yesterday that, under its legislative authority, the commission is “concerned about AI that misleads citizens about the act of voting - where and when to vote, how to cast a formal vote, [or] the fact that the voting process is secure.”

Rogers mentioned that the commission met with Meta about three weeks ago and has a follow-up meeting scheduled for later this week. The discussions included election-related protections in AI tools and on social media platforms.

Meta AI has only recently been integrated into the social media company’s primary platforms.
