Cybercrime Expert Confident MediSecure Data of 13M Australians Sold
Cybersecurity experts have revealed that the highly sensitive data of 12.9 million Australians, stolen from eScripts provider MediSecure, has already been sold on the dark web and is up for sale again. The 6.5-terabyte trove includes identifying details such as names, phone numbers, addresses, and Medicare numbers, along with sensitive medical information, including prescribed drugs and reasons for prescriptions. MediSecure confirmed in May that it was the victim of a ransomware attack in 2023 and recently disclosed the breach's scale, making it one of the largest in Australian history. Although it was previously unclear if the data had been sold, cyber threat intelligence analysts now indicate that at least one sale has occurred. The ABC had earlier reported that the data of nearly half of Australia's population was initially listed for sale for $50,000.
