Disposition Authorisations for Library and Archives Canada

The Library and Archives of Canada Act (2004) governs the disposition of federal government records, ensuring their appropriate disposal, preservation, or transfer.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) issues disposition authorizations, allowing institutions to either destroy, transfer, or remove records from government control. These authorizations are issued as Institution-Specific Disposition Authorizations (ISDAs) or Multi-Institution Disposition Authorizations (MIDAs). Appraisal of records follows a macroappraisal methodology, focusing on the broader context of record creation rather than content. Government institutions determine retention periods based on operational needs and legal obligations, while LAC provides guidance. When archival records are transferred to LAC, institutions must follow established standards to ensure their protection and proper handling.
