Ditching “Interesting” Data for Real Impact

Data is everywhere, but too often, we fall into the trap of focusing on what’s merely interesting rather than what truly matters. We've all sat in meetings where data is shared, heads nod, and people say, "That was interesting!"—yet nothing changes.

The problem? “Interesting” data can be a distraction. It might spark curiosity but doesn’t always drive action. Instead of chasing intriguing trends, data teams should prioritise insights that are both urgent and important—those that lead to meaningful decisions.

Using frameworks like the Eisenhower Matrix, organisations can cut through the noise, filtering out the irrelevant and focusing only on data that moves the needle. Leaders should also foster collaboration, ensuring discussions centre around insights that will drive change—not just impress an audience.

So, let’s rethink our approach. If data doesn’t inform action, it’s just noise. Shift the focus from interesting to impactful and unlock the real power of data.
