Federal agencies, excluding Defence and intelligence, must publish statements on their AI use within six months, as required by a new policy effective September 1, 2024. The policy mandates appointing an accountable technology executive and creating a transparency statement detailing AI practices, compliance, and measures to protect the public. These statements must be publicly accessible and reviewed annually. Although AI staff training is recommended, it's not mandatory. The policy aims to build public trust and complements existing laws. Minister for Finance Katy Gallagher emphasized its importance in ensuring responsible AI use in government.
