Invest in Data Governance and Transparency
The Association of Information Access Commissioners (AIAC), representing information commissioners and ombudsmen from Australia and New Zealand, convened in Adelaide on 1 November 2024 to address the challenges of emerging technologies on government transparency.
AIAC members emphasised the critical importance of robust data governance as governments increasingly depend on advanced technologies for decision-making and information management. In an era of declining public trust and the rise of disinformation, public sector leaders must act as responsible stewards of government information, treating it as a valuable public resource and source of truth.
AIAC encourages leaders to prioritise proactive disclosure practices and ensure their agencies reflect transparency and accountability. Recognising these evolving challenges, AIAC plans to support agencies by developing training programs that enhance data governance and promote the benefits of government openness, ultimately strengthening trust in democratic systems.
