LGITSA Advisory on DeepSeek AI for South Australian Councils
The launch of DeepSeek, a foreign-owned open-source AI model, in early 2025 has raised significant concerns regarding data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance for Australian organisations.
While both the Australian Federal and South Australian Governments have banned its use due to security risks, councils in South Australia must individually assess whether to permit its adoption.
To support councils in making informed decisions, LGITSA has published an advisory outlining the risks associated with DeepSeek. The document provides recommended measures to:
✅ Prevent unauthorised use
✅ Enforce security controls
✅ Strengthen AI governance
LGITSA strongly encourages all South Australian councils to review this advisory and implement proactive safeguards to protect community data.
