New Task Force to Focus on Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Digital Preservation Activities

Join the DPC Task Force in 2025 to tackle the carbon footprint of digital preservation! Apply by 18 Dec to collaborate on sustainable solutions.

The Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) is launching an exciting new Task Force in January 2025 to tackle the environmental impact of digital preservation activities. This initiative will focus on developing good practices and standards for calculating and mitigating carbon emissions in digital preservation. Meeting monthly for a year, the group aims to foster collaboration, build relationships, and provide a supportive space for sharing challenges, successes, and innovative solutions. Full details of the group’s terms of reference are available [here].

Chaired by Alicia Wise and hosted via DPC’s Zoom platform, the Task Force will bring together 10-15 members actively working on reducing their organisation's carbon footprint in digital preservation. The group’s outputs, including events, publications, and detailed case studies, will be shared openly with the wider community at the end of 2025, ensuring the broader benefit of their work. The initiative promises to not only advance sustainable practices but also provide a unique forum for learning and collaboration among industry peers.

If you are passionate about sustainability and have experience in calculating digital preservation carbon emissions, the DPC invites you to join this Task Force. To express your interest, email Jenny Mitcham at [email protected] by 18th December. Be sure to include a brief summary of your relevant work. Don’t miss this opportunity to contribute to a greener future for digital preservation!
