Online misinformation in Australia
Australians increasingly rely on social media more than any other form of media, offering vast opportunities for information access but also posing significant challenges due to misinformation. The overwhelming volume of online content makes it difficult to navigate and verify, creating opportunities for malicious actors to disrupt democratic processes and target individuals. This global issue is particularly acute in Australia, where many people lack the confidence and skills to identify misinformation effectively.
Based on an analysis of four linked datasets, this report highlights that most Australian adults want to combat misinformation and are actively trying to do so. However, it also reveals that many overestimate their ability to verify online information. The findings underscore the urgent need for media literacy initiatives, such as videos on fact-checking, quizzes to build digital knowledge, or explainers about platform business models and their role in misinformation. Hands-on training in media production could further empower individuals to think critically and accurately represent information, fostering resilience against the spread of false content.
