Preserving Paper Collections Short Courses – Apply now!

Learn hands-on paper conservation techniques, from washing to repair, in these short courses for conservators, archivists, and history enthusiasts.

The Preserving Paper Collections short courses are designed for conservators, archivists, curators, or anyone with an interest in the preservation of historic paper-based collections. These courses provide an opportunity to develop your understanding and hands-on experience in the preservation of paper materials and introduce conservation practices including washing, deacidification, flattening and repair.

  • Part 1 introduces you to where paper comes from, how it’s made and how it has changed over time. Learn how to deal with sticky tape, thermal copies and acidic inks, and how to identify environmental effects and design protocols for safe storage and handling.
  • Part 2 will help you identify a wide range of papers and document types, and introduces you to the basics of paper conservation treatment.

COST: At $400 each ($300 for UC students) the courses can be taken separately or together.
