Victoria’s FOI System Under Pressure
Victorian Information Commissioner Sean Morrison says the system is “no longer fit for purpose” and urgently needs reform. He’s calling for a faster, simpler process—especially for personal records—along with stronger powers to hold agencies accountable.
Delays are most severe in health and policing sectors, with Victoria Police alone sitting on nearly 3,000 overdue requests. A parliamentary inquiry has recommended replacing the FOI Act with a more modern, proactive model, but the state government has yet to respond.
Growing public mistrust and demand for transparency are fuelling FOI use. Morrison says modernising the system is key to rebuilding confidence and ensuring timely access to information.
